This issue is dedicated to the history of the creation, design, and combat service of the Spanish armored cruisers of the Reina Regente class. The lead ship, named so, was built by the British firm James & Georg Thomson & Co and delivered to Spain on the eve of the 1888 New Year's celebrations.
Without exaggeration, Reina Regente became a truly landmark ship for the Spanish Navy. Ordered long before the 1887 program, she ultimately defined all future Spanish shipbuilding for the next 15 years.
Reina Regente's first Spanish port was Ferrol. There, the cruiser was officially incorporated into the Practical Squadron, and in May, her commander handed over her duties to Captain 1st Rank Ismael Valerta Ordovas. Under his command, the ship visited virtually all significant points along the Spanish coast by November 1890. The new cruiser became perhaps the most powerful Spanish ship of this period, and therefore inspired legitimate pride in almost every Spaniard.
