The June issue of IL is themed "India: Many Languages, One Literature."

And this isn't just a bird's-eye view of great literature. The concept behind this issue is almost grandiose, as the origins of Indian literature date back to ancient times. Indian literature has been, and continues to be, written in many languages. It's enough to note that the country has 22 official languages alone! Translation is essential. And English often plays the role of translator and intermediary.

To help readers navigate these complexities, the magazine prefaced the issue with a note from its editors, Kala Sunder and Galina Shulga. "The magazine format," the introduction states, "dictates limitations... and we have devised a geolinguistic story-route through the literatures of eight classical Indian languages (plus the all-encompassing Sanskrit and English)."
