De Sade's novels were considered excessively scandalous and frank even by the standards of the frivolous 18th century, and the Marquis found himself behind bars more than once for his views, ideas and actions. It was while imprisoned in the Bastille that he wrote Justine, one of his first works in principle and the first novel that he was allowed to publish. True, without indicating the author. After the death of her parents, the pious Justine would have been happy to spend the rest of her life in a monastery, but fate decreed otherwise. The poor orphan is forced to leave the walls of the monastery and finds herself in the very epicenter of debauchery. Everyone around her shamelessly deceives, robs, kills and indulges in carnal pleasures. The girl gets a job as a servant to the most dissolute woman in all of Paris, ends up in prison and against her will becomes a member of a gang of cruel thugs, but all this time she tries to maintain virtue and decency. But can Justine continue to be pious when her very survival seems to depend on the opposite?
