In his new book, Pyotr Ivanovich Bagin—an artist and writer, an expert on the characters and habits of animals and birds—tells the story of a bear cub's first year: his birth in a den, his attachment to his mother bear, his introduction to "adult" food, and his learning of the harsh laws of forest life.
The little hero faces many trials. He miraculously escapes the jaws of a ferocious male bear and a devastating forest fire, overcomes a swift river current, and, with his last strength, struggles to reach the shore.
The book introduces children not only to the bear family but also to other forest inhabitants: wolves, lynxes, moose, beavers, badgers, hares, owls, cranes, woodcocks, waders, and more. The animals and birds in the author's illustrations are lively and charming, each with its own character and behavioral pattern. It's no wonder Bagin's works often transcend the boundaries of ordinary children's books and become collector's items for connoisseurs. They not only decorate the book but also hold a child's attention for a long time, helping them become immersed in the reading experience and making the learning process captivating.
The story of a bear cub's coming-of-age is essentially a miniature encyclopedia of forest life. It is written and illustrated with deep respect for the forest, for every animal and bird, in a welcoming tone, with warmth and gentle humor.
