This book publishes a translation into Russian of the first European biography of Ivan IV the Terrible (15ZZ -1584). Its author was the German pastor Paul Oderborn (155O - 1bo4), a participant in the Livonian War. Oderborn's work was first published in Latin in Germany in 1585. It is considered to be one of the foundational works in creating the "black legend" about the tyrant Ivan Vasilievich. This legend painted the Russian ruler in the most negative light, as a mad despot and executioner. Oderborn's book was repeatedly reprinted in Europe in collections about Russia for propaganda purposes. It is of interest as a monument of literature, a historical work and an example of political propaganda of the Renaissance.
The edition is provided with a scientific commentary, source articles and indexes. There is also a sketch of Oderborn's biography and an overview of his creative path. For researchers, students and all those interested in the history of Russia in the time of Ivan the Terrible and the history of Russian-European relations.
