Saint Demetrius of Rostov (1651-1709) was a bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan of Rostov and Yaroslavl, a spiritual writer, and the author of the renowned Lives of the Saints (Cheti-Minei). He began compiling the Lives of the Saints in 1684, devoting more than twenty years of his life to this work. Afterward, he devoted himself to pastoral ministry and the training of future priests. For his colossal contribution to the history of the Church, he was canonized half a century after his death.

Through the Lives of the Saints, one can trace the development of the Christian Church and sense the spirit of the saints who engendered faith in the Slavic peoples.

This edition is a new set of the pre-revolutionary text, printed at the Moscow Synodal Printing House between 1904 and 1911, in modern spelling with newly selected illustrations. Scripture quotations are provided, with a few exceptions, in Russian (King James Version). A list of ancient units of measurement and currency is included.
