In 1943, SS officers in charge of the concentration camp complex near the Polish city of Auschwitz ordered the creation of an orchestra of female prisoners. Nearly fifty prisoners from eleven countries played marching music for other forced laborers in all weathers. Living in extremely harsh conditions, the orchestra members were forced to regularly perform for Nazi officers, and some were occasionally called upon for solo performances. This ultimately saved the lives of almost every one of them. But at what cost?

Historian and biographer Anne Sebba, drawing on archival research and unique firsthand accounts, examines this tragic story, fraught with complex ethical questions. What role did music play in the death camp? How did it impact those who owed their lives to participating in the Nazi propaganda project? What was it like to entertain those who exterminated, including your loved ones?
