Sicily, 1904. On the eve of her engagement, the young freedom-loving Constanza learns that her father has committed suicide. The engagement is broken off, and her relatives send the grief-stricken girl to New York, a city where many Italians move in search of a better life. She settles in with distant relatives and starts life from scratch, experiencing painful homesickness. It is only after moving to Naples that Constanza regains her ability to breathe and love.

More than a hundred years later, her great-granddaughter, the opera singer Lucilla, accidentally learns of her great-grandmother's fate and attempts to find traces of her.

This story is filled with the menacing music of the waves and the scents of coastal towns. Here the heroine's joys and tragedies are intertwined with historical events. But no matter what storms fate has in store for her, the eternal blue sea, "where the sun is born and the sun dies," comforts her and gives her peace.
