The book includes two novels by the English writer and playwright William Wilkie Collins (1824–1889) — The Woman in White and The Moonstone — which critics consider to be the pinnacle of his work. The novel The Woman in White, written in 1859 and first published in 1860, is one of the world's first detective stories and one of the first (and best) sensation novels; it is based on a fascinating plot about a dark crime, the secret of which is hidden behind the image of an enigmatic woman dressed in a white dress. In The Woman in White, the writer, among other things, directly raises the issue of the inequality of men and women in the field of English marriage law, the wide possibilities for abuse by unscrupulous husbands and relatives; in The Moonstone, he points out unsightly stereotypes that the characters, typical representatives of the Victorian era, simply do not notice. In Russian (without indicating the translators), the novels "The Woman in White" and "The Moonstone" were published in 1860 and 1868, that is, almost immediately after the publication in the original language. It is these translations that are included in the book, which is illustrated with drawings (without indicating the artists), taken from the American literary and political magazine Harper's Weekly.
