"Woman on the stairs" - the new book by Bernhard Schlink, the author of the famous "Reader" - immediately after its publication topped the bestseller list of the magazine "Spiegel", and the rights to its translation were sold to at least a dozen countries. This is a novel about love with an almost detective intrigue around a painting that disappeared for forty years and suddenly reappeared. The amazing story is about the tangled relationships in a love quadrangle between the woman depicted in the painting and three men - a large businessman (the painting's client), a world-famous artist and a successful young lawyer who is invited to settle the conflict between the client and the artist, but becomes the protagonist of the conflict and the narrator of the story at the same time. As for the painting, one cannot help but notice its resemblance to Gerhard Richter's "Ema. Nude on the Stairs", a famous work by the most expensive artist alive today, who was not without reason dubbed the Picasso of the 21st century.
