Born in Milan but deeply attached to Venice, the city that is his "mother, wife and lover", Tinto Brass was already characterized as a child by a rebellious nature. Intolerant of any form of authority, he soon broke with his family, who saw him as a reckless and dissolute young man, a playboy who only caused trouble. After learning the art of filmmaking from Roberto Rossellini and Joris Ivens, Tinto Brass devoted himself to the genre of erotic cinema and began making such landmark films for the genre as Caligula, The Key, Peeping Tom and Salon Kitty, becoming the undisputed maestro of Italian erotica. Tinto Brass's films not only presented a new approach to erotic aesthetics, but also became vivid statements about freedom, enlightenment and society. Brass responded to critics' attacks with Aristotelian syllogisms and new ethical dilemmas in his films; his bold methods and approaches were admired by Federico Fellini and Pier Paolo Pasolini. This book offers a glimpse of Tinto Brass on the movie set, as well as the major milestones of his career.
