The Japanese will never confuse the sly tales of Shikoku Island with the cautionary tales of Okinawa Island, the romantic fantasies of Sado Island, or the dynamic, action-packed lore of Honshu Island. Each Japanese prefecture, city and even village has its own folkloric world with its own characters, plots and intonations. But no matter how different in birthplace Japanese fairy tales are, there is something common in them. They are deeply poetic - it is no coincidence that verse lines are often woven into the narrative, and they are full of real magic - miracles are found here at every turn.
It was the miracles that attracted the attention of artist Gennady Kalinovsky in the first place. In his illustrations, thunderbolts and fiery zarnitsa send rain with thunder and lightning down on the earth; the offenders of the weak grow long noses; furious devils in a chariot chase the escaped heroes; a sword turns into a formidable serpent and rushes at the thief... Such scenes became a field of experimentation for the artist: he chooses a complex technique and builds unusual angles. And in addition he makes small stroke drawings - ironic in meaning and elegant in execution. Retelling from Japanese by Vera Markova. For primary school age.
