The cowboy era lasted about a quarter of a century, but it changed America forever. The brutal winter of 1886-87 put an end to open-range cattle ranching: the Great Death claimed about a million head of cattle, after which financial difficulties finally undermined the industry. But by then, it had already managed to unite the North and South through trade, overcome the differences that arose as a result of the Civil War, and lay the foundations of the multicultural nation that the people of the United States are today.

The cowboys of the Wild West, who acquired the status of almost mythical heroes, have sunk into the past, but the myth about them has proved surprisingly tenacious: it not only gave birth to a new trend - the Western - in the arts and entertainment industry, but also influenced national policy in the United States. Moreover, "cattle fever" to an even greater extent than gold rush shaped the romantic idea of entrepreneurship: the desire for personal freedom and economic opportunity, which still drives college graduates to Silicon Valley today.
