Japan, XI century. In the imperial palace, life is boiling: courtiers are plotting, falling in love, being sad, and writing poetry. And we know about all the details only because one lady from the retinue of the empress came up with a wonderful idea to keep a diary. One day her notes fell into the wrong hands and liked the first readers so much that they later spread all over the world.
"Notes at the headboard" belong to a graceful genre of Japanese literature - zuihitsu, which means "following the brush." These are reflections on life and apt observations, elegantly drawn out in ink on exquisite paper. And today, in the XXI century, we have the opportunity to enjoy the original, psychologically subtle, ironic, sensual work of a medieval writer named Sei-Syonagon. Printed in abridgment.
