In 1921, fifteen-year-old Lev Sheinin, a provincial newspaper journalist, entered the Moscow Higher Literary and Artistic Institute. But in February 1923, he was assigned by the Komsomol to work in the USSR Prosecutor's Office. In 1927, Lev Sheinin's first short story, "The Court Is in Session," was published in the newspaper Izvestia. Over time, the author became one of the most experienced and capable Soviet investigators, combining crime solving with literary creativity. Most of the stories published in this collection were written between 1927 and 1941. In them, he recounted unusual crimes committed during this period.
