Mikhail Afanasyevich Bulgakov (1891–1940) was a doctor, playwright and screenwriter, a world-famous writer and classic of world literature. When Bulgakov passed away, he left unfinished the work he had been working on for several years, “Notes of the Dead”. It is believed that the plot of the novel is based on Bulgakov’s conflict with the management of the Moscow Art Theatre: his plays, due to censorship considerations of the time, were not allowed to be staged, which led to the playwright’s break with the theatre. The novel is narrated by a certain acquaintance of the author, Sergei Maksudov, whose last will was to publish his notes about the theatre backstage. The entourage of the theatre world and the atmosphere of literary searches are conveyed by expressive and detailed illustrations by the talented artist Maxim Popovsky.
