"A Hunter's Sketches" is a collection of short stories and essays about life in the Russian village. Turgenev was the first writer to extol the beauty of rural landscapes and the first to describe the everyday life and customs of the Russian people so thoroughly, vividly, emotionally, and diversely. What's not here! The narrator, and then the reader, is treated to a whole series of images of villagers, their destinies, their love stories, their fears, beliefs, quirks—their lives in the broadest sense of the word—are recounted. More than 150 years have passed since the publication of "A Hunter's Sketches," serfdom has been abolished in Russia, but the traits of the Russian character have remained virtually unchanged. Therefore, these stories and their characters will always remain close to our hearts.
"Mumu" is perhaps Turgenev's most famous story, and the name of the deaf-mute janitor Gerasim and the name of his beloved dog have become almost household words. Adapted numerous times for the screen, this story will leave no one indifferent. There is even a monument to Mumu in the French town of Honfleur.
