This book by the distinguished Russian playwright Alexander Moiseevich Volodin (1919–2001) consists of two of his prose works, "Optimistic Notes" and "Notes of a Drunk Man."

The text of "Optimistic Notes" is almost entirely incorporated into "Notes of a Drunk Man," but this does not diminish its intrinsic value. These are independent works, which, when juxtaposed, create a striking "stereoscopic" effect.

When combined, the author's difference in worldview is particularly evident. The difference in the potentials of time, the composition of the air, and the quality of the social atmosphere, to which Volodin was unusually sensitive, is striking.

In other words, we have before us a picture of what has happened to the author over a quarter of a century: what has changed within him and what has remained unchanged.
