Nikolai Gumilyov, one of the most prominent figures of the Silver Age, always had a thirst for adventure. Even at a young age, he fell passionately in love with Africa and, in the early 1910s, took part in two expeditions to distant Abyssinia. With the outbreak of World War I, the poet volunteered for the army. He spent four long years at the front, was seriously wounded, and was twice nominated for the St. George Cross for his valor in battle.

The experiences he experienced on expeditions and at the front formed the basis of two of Gumilyov's autobiographical works. His "African Diary" recounts his travels to Abyssinia, while the impartial, yet ironic, lyrical, and devoid of ugly details, "Notes of a Cavalryman" recounts the military campaigns of 1914 and 1915.
