The story "Notes from the House of the Dead" is largely autobiographical. In it, Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821-1881) artistically interpreted four years of hard labor in the Omsk prison, where he was exiled in the Petrashevites case.

The work tells about the lives of prisoners, their characters, fates and inner world. Through the eyes of the main character, nobleman Alexander Goryanchikov, convicted of murdering his wife, the reader gets acquainted with the harsh reality of penal life. Violence here becomes the norm, and hard work breaks even the strong in spirit.

The book had a huge influence on Russian literature, becoming one of the first works about prison life.
