"The Western Canon" is the most famous and perhaps most polemical book by Harold Bloom, the renowned American critic and literary scholar. Bloom passionately defends the autonomy of aesthetic value and the necessity of a canon against the "School of Resentment"—cultural tendencies that have become virtually unassailable since the book's first publication in 1994. Developing the concepts of "anxiety of influence" and "creative distortion" formulated in other books, Bloom examines twenty-six major authors of the Western world (from Dante to Tolstoy, from Goethe to Beckett, from Dickinson to Neruda), and places Shakespeare, who, he believes, in many ways shaped us all, at the very center of the canon.
