The action unfolds on the eve of perestroika in a godforsaken, dusty, and dirty provincial garrison, lost in the sands of Turkestan during the war in Afghanistan. The town is located on the outskirts of the Soviet empire: hopeless melancholy, a multitude of everyday problems, complex interethnic relations, a career dead end for junior officers, a complete lack of future prospects...

This story may seem like fiction, a mockery, or even a mockery of the army. Such things, they say, could not have happened during the building of socialism, and the moral character of Soviet people was always exemplary. Alas, believe it or not, everything written on these pages is the pure truth.

The lives of the officers and their families are comedy, sometimes farcical, drama, sometimes even tragedy, with Shakespearean passions. A little bit of everything. But it all happened...
What is the story about? It's about what to be ashamed of and what to be proud of—it depends on your perspective. The essence of the work is that all that glitters isn't gold, and among the "slackers" there are many reliable and decent guys. The main character, Lieutenant Nikita Romashkin, serves in this garrison, lives, falls in love, and has fun. Eventually, almost all the participants in the story end up in the war that's raging nearby, across the river, in Afghanistan.

The author's style is emotional and vibrant, and it's remarkably lively. We recommend it to young people, so they can learn, to Afghan veterans, so they can remember, and to everyone who loves good books.
