In American writer Thomas Wolfe's first novel, "Look Homeward, Angel," the author's life experiences are so relatable that it can be considered largely autobiographical. It's not only a chain of events closely following Wolfe's own life, but also a biography of the spirit, recounting the turbulent development of emotions, love and hate, passionate attachment to his homeland and flight from it, and, finally, the writer's creative torment. Critics responded favorably to the novel, but in the writer's hometown of Asheville, a scandal erupted, as locals immediately discovered the prototypes and perceived the novel as libelous.
