The textbook is intended for Orthodox schools of secondary education with advanced study of history (based on 3 hours of study per week). However, it can also be used in secular educational institutions, as it fully includes the mandatory minimum content of historical education for basic school and takes into account modern educational standards.
The textbook, written on the basis of the civilization approach, introduces children to the most important civilizations of the Ancient World, examining their political, religious, socio-economic and cultural history. The story is supplemented with vivid characterizations of historical figures, interesting information about the country's nature and people's everyday life.
The peculiarity of this textbook is that it integrates topics on Biblical and Church history, additional information on the religions of the peoples of the ancient world. The content of these topics is linked to the general course of historical development of human society, which makes the material more understandable and accessible for digestion. Along with the generally accepted interpretations of the events of the history of the Ancient World, the textbook presents an Orthodox view of a number of such important worldview topics as the origin of the world and man, the emergence of religion, Christianity and the Church.
The texts are age-appropriate for students. In order to consolidate and discuss the material covered in class, children are offered multilevel questions, cognitive tasks and creative assignments, which makes the process of studying General History more interesting. The textbook is equipped with maps and necessary reference information.
Almost every paragraph is accompanied by a section "Additional Reading", which includes entertaining texts from historical sources, excerpts from books by ancient and modern historians, and original opinions of researchers. This section also includes little-known stories about the lives of saints, written in a lively and fascinating way.
The authors and publishers of the textbook also took into account the fact that students need visuals for better assimilation of the educational material, so each paragraph is accompanied by a large number of various illustrations and photographs made by the author's team in different countries, museums and churches of the world.
