"Everybody Stand on Zanzibar." The book, which for 50 years, according to the polls of the magazine "Locus" is in the top twenty best fantasy novels. And, it seems, quite deservedly - Branner's grim predictions, made by him in 1968, are beginning to come true before our eyes. At the beginning of the twentieth century, someone calculated that the entire population of the Earth could be placed on the Isle of Wight, putting everyone shoulder to shoulder. By 1968, when John Brunner published his novel, this would have required the Isle of Man, which is four times the size. And a few decades later, by the time the novel unfolds, the number of Earth's inhabitants has reached such limits that there isn't enough room for them even on Zanzibar. The planet is suffocating. The population is going mad from cramped conditions, poverty and lack of prospects. People are tightly hooked on drugs legalized by the government to reconcile citizens to their bleak existence. After all, even quiet family pleasures are no longer available to everyone. In developed countries there are strict laws prohibiting people with imperfect genome to have children. For the majority, a full-fledged family becomes an unattainable and infinitely desirable dream. And so it would have gone on, if not for the invention of an Asian scientist, which gave hope for healthy offspring even to those who do not have perfect physical and mental health....
