A.V. Kartashev (1875-1960) was a famous scientist, publicist and religious figure. He was one of the leaders of the St. Petersburg Religious and Philosophical Society. After the February Revolution he was Minister of Confessions in the Provisional Government. Having emigrated in 1920, he was for many years a professor at the St. Sergius Theological Academy in Paris. A.V.Kartashev is the author of a number of fundamental works, including the two-volume "History of the Russian Church" recently published in our country. No less famous in the West is his other major work, "Ecumenical Councils," which was published in 1963, after the author's death. The present edition is the first publication of this book in our country. It reflects the most important period in the history of the Christian Church (325-825), when its canonical norms were being formed and the process of Christianity's formation as a universal, world religion was underway.
