Only six numbers. The main forces that shape the Universe

This book by the world-renowned astrophysicist and Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, Sir Martin Rees, describes the fundamental forces that govern our Universe. The author argues that the expanding Universe can be defined by just six numbers: N, e, Ω, l, Q, D, each of which plays a special and decisive role in its evolution, and together they determine its development and potential for possibilities. Two of these are related to the basic forces; the other two determine the size and general structure of the universe and indicate whether it will exist forever; two more tell us about the properties of the universe itself. If any of these were slightly different, there would be no stars and life could not exist. We could only have come into being - and exist now - in a universe with the right combination of these fundamental numbers. And so realizing this gives a whole new perspective on the Universe and our place in it, as well as on the nature of physical laws themselves. Martin Rees has managed to describe the key concepts of cosmology, which is rapidly developing and is at the forefront of science today, in an accessible language, without the use of complex mathematical apparatus.
