The development of vertical takeoff and landing aircraft began in Germany during World War II, but over the past 80 years only two models of this type of aircraft have been put into service - the domestic Yak-38 attack aircraft and the British Harrier fighter-bomber. The first Soviet Yak-36P vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, designed to protect aircraft carriers from airborne enemies, took to the skies in 1964. The Yak-38, which became its successor, was based on four heavy aircraft carrier cruisers and was the most mass-produced domestic combat aircraft with vertical takeoff and landing (a total of 231 machines of three modifications were produced). Unfortunately, the pinnacle of Soviet developments in this field - the Yak-141 multi-role fighter, which surpassed not only its predecessors, but also the NATO Harrier, has forever remained in the category of experimental machines, becoming a museum piece. Even the ultramodern F-35B can be called an analog of the Yak-141 only conditionally, because the vertical takeoff of the American fighter-bomber of the fifth generation is possible only at a minimum weight without armament.
In a new book by a famous aviation historian, based also on archival materials, considered all domestic aircraft vertical takeoff and landing - a wide range of these aircraft developed in the USSR. From unrealized projects and experimental machines (for example, vertical take-off amphibian VBA-14) to Yak-38 and Yak-141. The publication is illustrated with many photographs.
