The Headless Horseman, which brought fame to its author, began publication in installments in 1865 and as a book a year later. This novel intertwines love, jealousy, despair, nobility, and the thirst for retribution. The beautiful Louise Poindexter gives her heart to a fearless mustanger, unwittingly setting in motion a chain of fateful events. Meanwhile, in the vast expanses of Texas, a mysterious murder occurs, and residents shudder with terror at the sight of the mysterious figure of a silent horseman in the distance. This edition features the first complete translation of the novel into Russian, by Alexander Yakovlevich Seredin (1961). The text features remarkable illustrations by the Soviet book illustrator and poster artist Nikolai Mikhailovich Kochergin (1897–1974).
