Alice's Time

Composer and philosopher Vladimir Martynov is convinced that the era of verbal civilization is ending before our eyes. All we can create from words is a wall of misunderstanding. Words cease to be the meaning we are accustomed to "looking into"—now, to find meaning, we must pass through Words, like Carroll's Alice passing through the looking glass. We must unlearn how to speak and learn to remain silent. Martynov's new book is a fascinating analysis of the processes unfolding in art after the creation of the most radical works of the 20th century. Such "points of no return" as Malevich's "Black Square," Cage's "4'33", and Duchamp's urinal testify to a completely new human perception of reality. The Age of Words has been replaced by the Time of Alice—a time of silence and contemplation. According to Martynov, there are many practices in art that allow us to approach "silence" as a necessary condition for attaining Knowledge.
