This study focuses on the events of the Russo-Swedish War of 1590–1595, which resulted in the return of the fortresses of Yam, Koporye, Ivangorod, and the Karelian district to the Russian state. Until recently, this conflict has attracted little attention from Soviet and Russian historians, and the war of 1590–1595 can rightfully be considered forgotten. Most existing scholarly works, directly or indirectly addressing this topic, do not address the military aspects of the conflict.
This book focuses specifically on the military component of this conflict and covers such aspects as the strategy and tactics of the warring parties, as well as the course and nature of military campaigns and combat operations. Particular attention is given to a detailed examination of the Russian campaign against Narva (the Rugodiv campaign) of 1590. Drawing on Russian, Swedish, and Finnish sources, the author reconstructs the main events of that campaign, which culminated in the recapture of the Russian northwestern lands on the coast of the Gulf of Finland. In addition, the book provides a detailed study of the military actions of 1591–1592 that took place in Ingria, Finland, the Lower Narva region and the Russian North.
