In London from Paris arrives Augustus Melmotte, Esquire, the owner of a huge, according to rumors, fortune, able to "buy and sell shares to raise or destroy any company," and even at his discretion to raise or drop the quotation of the national currency; the past of the financier is shrouded in mystery, but they say, "allegedly he built a railroad across Russia, supplied the army of the South during the War of North and South, supplied arms to Austria and once bought all the iron in England." He acquires a mansion in Grosvenor Square and tries to buy the estate of Pickering Park in Sussex, becomes chairman of the board of directors of a large company, promising investors fabulous profits, and runs for Parliament. Around him swirls somnomys idle aristocrats, greedy nouveau riche and cunning widows, the hand of his daughter seeks the most enviable grooms of the empire - but how solid the foundation of his success?.... The novel has been adapted for television and radio several times, most famously in a 2001 BBC mini-series (called The Roads We Choose on Russian television) directed by David Yates (later famous for the four Harry Potter films and all the Fantastic Beasts films). The title role was played by David Souchette, world famous as Hercule Poirot in the Agatha Christie's Poirot series (1989-2013).
