In an alternative history, the Cuban Missile Crisis escalated into World War III. The USSR and the United States exchanged nuclear strikes, killing tens of millions of people. Almost the entire European part of the USSR, along with many cities in the Caucasus, Central Asia, and Siberia, was devastated. More than half of the United States was destroyed. In Western Europe, Warsaw Pact tank armies were rushing toward the Rhine. France, thanks to a successful diplomatic maneuver by its president, withdrew from NATO at the last minute and declared itself neutral, along with Austria and Switzerland. And in East Asia, the war led to previously unimaginable conflicts and alliances.
