Vladimir Germanovich Tan-Bogoraz (1865–1936) was a prominent Russian and Soviet ethnographer, folklorist, and writer.
As a student, Tan-Bogoraz became fascinated with the ideas of populism and was exiled to Kolyma for his revolutionary activities. He spent ten years there (1889–1899), studying the unique way of life, language, and culture of the peoples of northeastern Siberia. It was this exile that defined his life, making him a world-renowned ethnographer and one of the first Russian writers to explore the theme of the North in fiction.
One of Tan-Bogoraz's most significant works is the novel "The Resurrection Tribe" (1935). The book is dedicated to the post-revolutionary revival of "the most unfortunate of the northern tribes: the downtrodden, ruined, and half-exterminated Yukaghir people." As the author noted, the history of the Yukaghirs is also the history of many other northern peoples who inhabited vast areas between the Arctic and Pacific Oceans in ancient times—from the Lena River to the Anadyr River.
