The raven is one of the key images for European symbolism and culture. The raven was worshiped in ancient times. According to ancient mythology, it was punished by the gods for its vanity, and its white plumage was replaced by black. The Celts and Germans believed that the black bird served as a messenger of the gods. The Christian Middle Ages saw the raven as the embodiment of the forces of evil, declared war on it, and the Church even began to promote another bird image - the eagle. Thus, the negative image of the raven in fairy tales, fables and poetry, based on fear and disgust, was fixed. Even today, on a symbolic level, it remains a harbinger of bad news and an inhabitant of cemeteries. And yet, in the scientific community, the black bird is gradually taking revenge, its cognitive abilities are amazing: ravens play and talk. The raven, according to Pastoureau, "is capable of deceiving anyone: animals, people, gods. Sometimes, even a historian cannot cope with it." This book by Michel Pastoureau is dedicated to the analysis of the numerous cultural metamorphoses of the image of the raven, its influence on world culture and hundreds of stories associated with it - from ancient myths to modern cinema.
