Flipping through the first pages of James Doty's book, the reader will probably think that before him - another memoirs of a doctor. And... he will be mistaken. Having familiarized himself with the first chapters, the reader will think that before him - another motivational book, which tells "how to make a million". And ... again mistaken. Yes, there are in the book and memories of successful brain surgeries, and practice on visualization of desires, and the story of a poor boy from an American backwater, who got everything he wanted, including the proverbial million, or rather, tens of millions. But the author went much further: he told what to do in a situation when a cherished dream is fulfilled, but happiness in life has not added.
In 2018, it was announced that James Doty's book "Heart Compass. The story of how an ordinary boy became a great surgeon by unraveling the mysteries of the brain and the secrets of the heart" became the prototype for the seventh track of Magic Shop in BTS's album Love Yourself: Tear. The book instantly rose in the weekly bestseller ranking of Aladin, Korea's most popular bookstore.
"Heart Compass" is a memoir by James Doty where he recounts the lessons he learned from a woman named Ruth whom he met in a miracle shop, one of those lessons, or rather tricks, is to be sincere.
The BTS song Magic Shop is written and produced by Jeong Chongguk. In this song, he shares his own experiences and asks fans to open their souls when they are in pain, wanting to convey that they are not alone.
The group first introduced Magic Shop in the Fake Love teaser, which begins with the line "Magic Shop is a psychodramatic technique that exchanges fear for a positive attitude." In the teaser, BTS band members enter a "shop" where they exchange various items. The teaser was a reference to Dr. Doty's novel, whose sales increased 510 times.
After the release of the BTS album, Dr. Doty published a post thanking BTS for using his book as inspiration.
