Magic Shop: The Book That Inspired the BTS Song "Magic Shop"

After flipping through the first pages of James Doty's book, a reader will likely think they're reading another doctor's memoir. And... they'd be wrong. After reading the first few chapters, a reader might assume they're reading another motivational book about "how to make a million." And... they'd be wrong again. Yes, the book includes recollections of successful brain surgeries, a workshop on visualizing desires, and the story of a poor boy from the American outback who got everything he wanted, including the proverbial million—or rather, tens of millions. But the author goes much further: he explains what to do when a cherished dream has come true, but happiness in life hasn't increased.

In 2018, it was announced that James Doty's book "Compass of the Heart: The Story of How an Ordinary Boy Became a Great Surgeon by Unraveling the Mysteries of the Brain and the Secrets of the Heart" served as the inspiration for the seventh track, "Magic Shop," on BTS's album Love Yourself: Tear. The book instantly rose to the top of the weekly bestseller list at Aladin, Korea's most popular bookstore.
"Compass of the Heart" is a memoir by James Doty, in which he recounts the lessons he learned from a woman named Ruth, whom he met at a magic shop. One of these lessons, or rather tricks, is to be sincere.

BTS's song "Magic Shop" was written and produced by Jeon Jungkook. In the song, he shares his own experiences and asks fans to open up when they experience pain, wanting to let them know they are not alone.

The group first introduced Magic Shop in the teaser for "Fake Love," which begins with the line, "Magic Shop is a psychodramatic technique that exchanges fear for positivity." In the teaser, the members of BTS enter the "shop" and exchange various objects. The teaser was a reference to Dr. Doty's novel, which has seen sales increase 510-fold.
Following the release of BTS's album, Dr. Doty posted a message thanking BTS for using his book as inspiration.
