Aleksandr Alfredovich Bek (1902/03 – 1972) was a Russian Soviet writer, participant in the Civil and Great Patriotic Wars, and war correspondent. The central place in Bek’s work is occupied by the famous tetralogy “Volokolamsk Highway”, which is based on the feat of the Panfilov Division during the heroic defense of Moscow in 1941. The story is told by Senior Lieutenant Baurzhan Momysh-Uly, who commanded an infantry battalion. After just a month of fighting near Moscow, the real Momysh-Uly was appointed regiment commander, and in 1945 he headed the division; in 1990, he was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.

The first two stories of the tetralogy were published in 1943–1944, and the third and fourth in 1959–1960. Work on the book lasted almost two decades. "Volokolamsk Highway" was translated into many languages and gained truly worldwide fame. "This book, swift and simple, is one of the greatest works in all the literature generated by the recent world war," wrote Palmiro Togliatti.

In addition to "Volokolamsk Highway", this edition also includes war stories and essays by Alexander Bek, created in different years.
