The Institute of Russian Literature (Pushkin House) of the Russian Academy of Sciences has undertaken the preparation of the first scientific and critical collection of works by the outstanding thinker, literary critic, art historian, theorist and critic of ballet Akim Lvovich Volynsky (1861/1863-192b). He wrote numerous articles on Russian and foreign writers of the 19th and first quarter of the 20th centuries, a major work on the history of Russian literary criticism and social movements, books on Dostoevsky and Leskov, fundamental works on Leonardo da Vinci and Rembrandt, philosophical works, theoretical and critical works on the art of classical dance. Volynsky introduced new ideas into Russian aesthetic and philosophical thought, based on which he was able to study a large volume of materials on culture, literature and fine art.
This book publishes for the first time A. Volynsky's fundamental work "Rembrandt" (1924-1925). In the course of twenty years of studying the artist's legacy and research devoted to it, he developed an original concept of Rembrandt's personality and his work. In light of this concept, following his philosophical and aesthetic ideas, the author gave a number of brilliant interpretations of not only widely known masterpieces, but also many of Rembrandt's paintings and graphic works that have not attracted the close attention of scientists.
The book is intended for art historians, historians of Russian philosophical aesthetic thought, and a wide range of readers.
