From the first years of its existence, the Old Russian state was engaged in military actions in different directions: Khazars and Pechenegs, Polovtsians and Yatvyags, Hungarians and Germans, Romans and Byzantines, Mongols and Lithuanians - the sword from the West and the saber from the East continued to threaten the Russian land for many centuries.
This book comprehensively explores the peculiarities of the military and political development of the Russian state from the moment of its formation in 862 to the middle of the XV century - the time of the beginning of the reign of Grand Duke Ivan III, who restored the state sovereignty of Russia. In this regard, the author faced a difficult task - to consider not only all the significant wars of this period, but also the structure of the armed forces of Russia - their basis was made up of druzhinnye troops. Only at the very end of the period under study did the army begin to be rebuilt, in the course of which the former druzhinniks, petty princely and boyar vassalage, turned into sovereign servants - landlords, who received in conditional holding the lands inhabited by peasants. The structure of the book follows this task. In its first part is a detailed account of the wars and armed conflicts of the pre-Mongol time and the period of Horde rule over Russia, in the second part are given and analyzed data preserved in the sources about the acquisition of Russian troops, weapons and supplies to the men of war, their acquisition of the necessary military skills and knowledge, information about the most famous representatives of the military class of ancient Russia. The book is addressed to specialist historians and a wide range of erudite readers who are not indifferent to the past of Russia.
