The collection of works by the English writer H. G. Wells includes his best science fiction novels, which have become a kind of calling card of the author and a classic of "warning literature": "The Time Machine" (1895) - a dark story about the life of humanity in the year 802701, "The Island of Doctor Moreau" (1896) and "The Invisible Man" (1897) - stories about amazing experiments carried out by brilliant and mad scientists who boldly transgress the laws of nature, legal prohibitions and moral norms, and "The War of the Worlds" (1897) - one of the first books on the theme of alien aggression, popular in later literature and cinema, threatening the existence of humanity. "When the Sleeper Wakes" (1898–1899) and "The First Men in the Moon" (1901) are examples of Wells's social science fiction, in which various negative models of social structure are played out (be it a lunar hierarchical "anthill" society controlled by the Grand Lunar, or a totalitarian regime established by the White Council on Earth at the end of the 21st century) and the possibilities for their change.
