The work War and the Bible (1932) by St. Nicholas of Serbia (Velimirovic), written between the two World Wars, is devoted to the attitude of Christianity toward war. St. Nicholas says that the outcome of every war is decided by God and that all ancient and modern wars can be understood and explained only in the light of the Bible. Reflecting on the causes of wars in general, the author writes: "...man's war with man is the fruit of man's war with God." St. Nicholas concludes that defeat in war is the result of sin and the departure of the people, rulers and military leaders from God, while piety and good morals of all of the above lead to victories and peace. This work by St. Nicholas (Velimirovich) will be useful for the widest range of Orthodox readers.
