From a long line of nationally distinctive works of Russian literature—the "military" tales of the 11th-17th centuries—the best have been selected, combining masterful depiction of battle scenes with an understanding of the socio-political significance of the events they describe. "The Tale of Batu's Destruction of Ryazan in 1237," arbitrarily compiled by I.I. Sreznevsky from various manuscripts, was published in 1867 and subsequently reprinted in various anthologies. The text of "The Tale of the Battle of Kulikovo..." was reconstructed by V.P. Adrianov-Peretz based on the most authoritative manuscript in the State Historical Museum, with corrections based on the other five manuscripts. “The Tale of the Capture of Azov...” was first published by M.M. Shcherbatov in 1771, but the critical edition was published by A.S. Orlov in 1906. For this edition, the texts of the stories were subjected to new archaeological study and reconstruction based on manuscript sources.
