In 1894, the English traveler Aubin Trevor-Battye spent several months in the Russian Arctic, on the island of Kolguyev, and collected a wealth of material about the nature of this region and the life of its inhabitants - the Nenets (Samoyeds). The author broke the Europeans' ideas about the north of Europe as a lifeless uninhabited desert. In Trevor-Betty's vivid literary narration we can see the people who feel happy here; the unique nature, mesmerizing with its peculiar beauty and charm. An important feature of the book was its somewhat encyclopedic nature. Trevor-Betty's main task was to study the nature of the island and, above all, the birds living on it. However, he himself admitted: "...The idea of the unknown is what attracted me, as it had attracted hundreds of others before me".
The book, published in English in 1895, immediately became a real bestseller; two years later it was published in Russian translation. The present edition is supplemented with an introductory article by candidate of historical sciences N. A. Kuznetsov and a large number of illustrations from the original version. During the preparation of the book, in a number of cases, the geographical names incorrectly transcribed by the translator of the 1897 edition have been corrected (brought in line with Russian maps of the late 19th century).
