This book is an introduction to the Linux operating system's internals. It examines the main kernel subsystems and their components, access control mechanisms and privileges, and the principles and mechanisms of containerization. It focuses on Linux components, subsystems, and their functioning as a unified system. It describes in detail the user environment, the command-line interface (CLI), the command interpreter language, and its use for automating common tasks. All concepts are clearly illustrated with examples developed and tested by the author.
The 3rd edition describes mechanisms for forced access control and integrity monitoring unique to the Russian secure distribution Astra Linux and operating systems in general. It takes into account the latest changes to OS components and updates the example listings. The chapter on the network subsystem has been expanded, and a chapter on modern tracing, load measurement, and performance monitoring tools has been added.
