In the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905. The Russian Imperial Navy suffered a terrible defeat: 14 of the 15 battleships involved in the fighting and 11 of the 19 cruisers were lost. The Japanese fleet lost only 2 battleships and 2 cruisers. After Tsushima the legendary Vladivostok cruiser detachment remained the only combat-ready connection of the Russian fleet in the Pacific Ocean, and its lightning operations entered the history of the war at sea and attracted close attention of foreign military specialists. "Rurik", "Russia", "Gromoboy", "Bogatyr" successfully operated on Japanese communications, sinking transport and merchant ships, capturing steamships with contraband. To fight them, the Japanese were forced to allocate significant forces, including four battleship cruisers, but Vladivostok cruisers repeatedly managed to send to the bottom of the transports literally under the nose of a superior enemy. On August 1, 1904. "Russia", "Thunderbird" and "Rurik" with honor withstood the cruelest hours of battle with a much stronger squadron of Vice Admiral Kamimura. "Rurik", having received the heaviest damage, will be sunk by its crew, and "Gromoboy", "Russia" and "Bogatyr" will still take part in the First World War. A well-known expert on the Russian Imperial Navy, based on archival documents, tells in detail about the history of creation, design, combat operations of the Vladivostok cruisers. The edition is illustrated with unique drawings and photographs.
