The historical novel by Primorsky writer Alexander Tokovenko (1937-2013) “Vladivostok Millionka”, the action of which takes place in the first third of the 20th century in Vladivostok, Khabarovsk, Iman, Tetyukh and Kartun, tells mainly about the bright and exotic life of Vladivostok Chinatown, located two blocks from the very center of the city and still called “Millionka” or “Million Dvor”. “…The unusual crowding of buildings, the polyphonic guttural talk of a tight crowd, the extremely compact huts and taverns, restaurants and barber shops…”, is how the “Far Eastern Pocket Calendar-Reference” characterized Millionka in 1928. But the book tells not only about the daily active life of the Chinese diaspora, but also immerses the reader in the criminal whirlpool of Millionka - with drug trafficking, gambling, prostitution, espionage, illegal gold mining and timber export, with the merciless exploitation of their compatriots, mutual responsibility and terror.
