Call the Midwife is Jennifer Whorf's memoir of her life and work in London in the 1950s. A young woman, Jenny Lee, surprising herself, finds a job as a midwife at the community of St. Raymond Nonnatus in the East End. Dirty streets scarred by the recent war, noisy docks, overcrowded tenements, crime, and extreme poverty—in the mid-20th century, this area was hardly prosperous. The community's nurses and nuns were the only ones tirelessly caring for women from poor working-class families. Working as a midwife, the author observed the difficult lives of these people day after day, witnessing their tragedies and joys, and becoming convinced of their incredible strength of character.

Toward the end of her life, Jennifer Whorf wrote a remarkable book about that time, about the nuns and ordinary people of the East End, the first literary account of the selfless work of midwives.
