By 1944, the Soviet government's long diplomatic efforts had begun to bear fruit. Roosevelt and Churchill finally believed their chances of gaining a winning position in Europe had reached their peak. The time had come to shore up Hitler's Reich from the West by opening the USSR's long-awaited Second Front. And so, on the night of June 6, 1944, combined Anglo-American forces under the command of General Eisenhower began airborne and seaborne assaults on the coast of occupied France. Thus began the Normandy landings, known as Operation Overlord.

In this book, renowned British military historian Max Hastings describes the history of this battle. The work draws primarily on American, British, and German sources on the Allied military operations in northwest France, and particularly in Normandy. The author also draws on unpublished materials stored in government, departmental, and private archives, as well as his own notes of conversations with participants in Operation Overlord, their diaries, and memoirs.
