What role do material objects play in social life? To what extent do the objects around us influence the construction of collective and individual identity? Alexei Golubev, in his book The Life of Things, seeks answers to these questions in the history of the late USSR. Unlike most researchers who focus on the role of language and ideology in the formation of the Soviet self, the author emphasizes the importance of materiality for the historical and social imagination developed by the country's inhabitants during late socialism. He demonstrates how a variety of objects ranging from architectural monuments to television sets structured the social life of Soviet people, built their tastes and preferences, and defined relations within collectives and communities. This view of late Soviet history not only helps us to better understand it, but also allows us to see this experience as an integral part of global modernity.
