In September 1956, the first issue of the children's humor magazine "Vesyolye Kartinki" was published in the USSR. Its founding father and first editor was the famous cartoonist Ivan Maksimovich Semenov. Since the magazine was intended for children who were learning or had just learned to read, drawings occupied a predominant place in it. It was in "Vesyolye Kartinki" that a unique team of "funny little people" gathered: Karandash and Samodeikin, Buratino and Thumbelina, Dunno, Gurvinek, Petrushka and Cipollino. With them, Soviet boys and girls learned about the world, made crafts, and guessed riddles.

The magazine was incredibly popular - by mid-1981, its circulation was 9,500,000! The first book of our anthology is dedicated to the first two years of the magazine's life, and the materials, with rare exceptions, are reproduced exactly as they were at that time.

Once I. M. Semenov was asked: "What is your motto?" And the master answered: "Laughter strengthens health." We are sure that our "Funny Stories in Pictures" will bring children a lot of joy and fun!
